Bernard Simms, 84, of Newtown, died peacefully August 3, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Stockport, England, on February 16, 1933, son of Kathleen (Ellison) and Joseph Simms.

Mr Simms shared his life with his loving wife, Katherine, for 59 years and with his five children, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He taught by example; he raised his family with love and hard work, and he spread laughter wherever he went. Mr Simms had always been quick to forgive and ready to enjoy the company of others. He was a devoted husband, a strong father, and a great friend to many people around the world that he traveled.

He was a gentle soul who walked through life bringing love and laughter. His loved ones honor him with how they live their lives reflecting his gentleness, his laughter, and his devotion to family and say, "May God hold him close in loving arms."

Mr Simms and Katherine knew each other since they were children and married in 1957. They emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1958, then to Newtown in 1969 where they put down roots and raised their family.

His five children and their spouses, Kerry and Warren Hall, Mark and Diane Simms, Patrick and Jennifer Simms, Katie Simms, and Matthew Simms; his wonderful grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Devon Hall, Alexander, Valerie, Cassandra, and Gareth Jones, Stephanie, Savannah, and Alex Summers, Brittany and Matthew Roberts, Zachary, Anastasia, Paige, Rosie, and Thomas; and his four wonderful great-grandchildren survive him. Mr Simms is also survived by his brother, Terrence Simms; his sister-in-law, Margaret; his niece; his nephew; and all his friends from over the years during his long wonderful fun life.

His loving wife and his parents predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, on Wednesday, August 9, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery, 22 Elm Drive, Newtown. His loved ones request those who wish to join and hold Mr Simms in their thoughts and prayers.
