Former Newtown High School standout softball player Kate Bowen helped the Stratford Brakettes to a 5-0 win over the Connecticut Charmers at Frank DeLuca Field in Stratford on August 11, as the Brakettes earned their fourth straight Women’s Major Softball (WMS) championship.

Bowen singled in her first at bat, then led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and scored on a Denise Dennis home run to break a scoreless tie.

Bowen also got on base in the fourth when she worked a two-out walk.

The Brakettes closed out their season with a perfect 68-0 record, the third time in franchise history that the feat has been accomplished. The 1971 team went 57-0 en route to the Amateur Softball Association national crown, while the 2011 Stratford Brakettes tallied a perfect 63-0 mark on the way to their second-straight WMS crown.

Bowen had 74 hits in 65 games, batted .359, and had a team-high seven triples. She also pitched and posted a 2-0 mark, struck out 13 batters, and didn’t allow a run to score in 13 innings of work.

Kate Bowen helped the Brakettes win their fourth straight championship. Bowen batted .359 and posted a 2-0 record from the pitching circle during her team's perfect season.
