Business name: Millstone Studio

Address: 318 South Main Street Newtown

Owner: Christopher Miller

Business background: Owner Chris Miller is a history teacher at a magnet school in Danbury who has a lifelong love of creating pottery. Growing up, he enjoyed drawing and paining, but after exhausting all the options for classes at Newtown High School, he took a pottery class and discovered his true passion. He took as many classes and spent as much time in the pottery studio as possible.

After operating his own studio at his Newtown home, he decided to relocate to a commercial space after being approached by a growing number of people seeking pottery making lessons. He wanted to open a commercial studio in Newtown to be close to home and his family.

Business focus: Millstone Studio is a 1,000-plus-square-foot clay studio designed for all levels of potters. Visitors and clients are encouraged to relax, have fun, and create with available equipment for hand-building and wheel throwing with plenty of clay and unique glaze options. Visitors and clients can either stop in for a tour, a single session, or sign up for group lessons. The studio also offers memberships and gift certificates. Single session classes meet on Wednesday or Saturday, and private lessons can be scheduled for a minimum of two hours from 9 to 4 on Saturdays. Class sizes are limited, structured around the needs of each individual, and meet on either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday.

Members are entitled to ten percent off any other Millstone Studio offerings. Members can come in to use the studio Monday — Friday from 8 to 11:30 am; Saturday, 8 am to 3 pm; and Sunday, 8 am to noon. Interested Newtown residents are invited to get a group of friends together and get a little muddy while enjoying a drink of your choice. Wine & Wheel Nights occur every Friday and Saturday from 7 to 9 pm, and spaces are limited to six to eight attendees (BYO beverages of choice).

Open Studio Hours: Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 pm, or by appointment.
