ROUND-TABLE VICTORIAN STUDY SEMINARS WILL OPEN OCT. 1 IN BROOKLINE, MASS.

avv/gs set 8/23 #710156

BROOKLINE, MASS. — Victorian Study Seminar, the 2007-2008 year of roundtable seminars, will be offered on Monday afternoons, starting October 1 and Tuesday evenings, beginning October 2. This is the 14th year of a revolving class cycle of private seminars covering American decorative arts of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, through the Nineteenth Century Revival styles and into the Twentieth Century.

This year’s weekly presentations will begin with architecture and interior architecture, (walls, windows and chimney pieces with historic wallpapers and textile uses) for the mid-Nineteenth Century Gothic Revival, rococo and Renaissance Revival styles.

Session 2, following the Christmas holidays, will continue, same format, with late Nineteenth Century Eastlake and Art Nouveau Styles. Classes are presented using illustrations and hands-on object study during the seminar — no slides. A complimentary field trip is planned for each session.

Nancy A. Smith, AAA, an historian of architecture and decorative arts, as well as a recertified personal property appraiser, is a senior member of the Appraisers Association of America, Inc, and has been a gallery instructor for many years at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Smith is eager for students to understand, appreciate and enjoy the architecture of the period and its decorative objects including furniture, silver and ceramics, how they are made, and what happens to them over time, therefore providing practical clues to identification. Preservation awareness and attention become part of the stewardship responsibility of historic architecture and object ownership.

The tuition per session for the two-hour round-table seminars is $400. A brochure is available upon request with scheduled seminar dates: Historic Decorative Arts Study/ Nancy A. Smith (A Division of Smith Appraisal Associates, Inc), 73 Seaver Street, Brookline MA 02445.

For information, call Smith at 617-739-1890.
