FISH of Newtown drivers met at a post Labor Day potluck picnic and enjoyed the various foods, drinks and the camaraderie of the dedicated volunteers.

They exchanged stories of their experiences and commented on the ever expanding requirements and increasing need for more volunteer drivers.

FISH has been driving patients to their doctors’ appointments since 1969.  The population of Newtown has drastically increased since then and particularly the age group (over 55), who have no relatives living in town and require frequent visits to medical appointments has put a strain on the volunteers.

FISH of Newtown is seeking more volunteers who will use their own automobile to transport patients, who have no other way of getting there, to doctors’ appointments.

The commitment would be for only one or two mornings a month. A ride usually takes three hours, and the volunteer miles driven may be deducted from an income tax that takes detailed deductions.

Any adult with a good driving record, a car in good condition that is insured, may volunteer for this service. FISH of Newtown drives only residents of Newtown.

For more information and to volunteer call Colleen Honan, president, at 203-426-0714; or Elaine Landau, secretary, at 203-364-1152.

FISH of Newtown is hoping to expand its current corps of drivers. The service group is seeking additional volunteers who are able to use their own vehicle to transport residents to doctor’s appointments.
