The girls' volleyball teams from Newtown High School and Joel Barlow of Redding matched up for the second time in a handful of days, on September 18, as the Nighthawks visited Barlow.

Newtown prevailed in a five-game match at home on September 13. In the latest matchup, the Falcons came away with a hard-fought, five-game victory, 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9).

Kim Buttery had a four aces, two kills, 36 assists, and 12 digs; Zoe Beals had 16 kills and eight digs; and Erin Burns registered seven kills and four blocks for the Hawks.

"It was another fantastic five set match. Unfortunately, we made more errors than they did and we let the heat in the gym get to us. Both teams got very tired, very quickly, and that's when the errors started to happen. We definitely need to become a much better passing team in order to compete with the stronger opponents that we will face," Newtown Coach Tom Czaplinski said.

The Nighthawks, who had beaten Immaculate of Danbury in three games on September 15, carry a record of 3-2 into a Friday, September 22 visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield, beginning at 5:30 pm.

Newtown, after visiting New Milford on Monday, September 25, at 6:45 pm, will host Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Wednesday, September 27, beginning at 6:30 pm.
