Solid pitching, great fielding and timely hitting helped lead the Newtown Reds to a win and a tie with a pair of Ridgefield teams (the Landscapers and the Bankers) in Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League action .

Meanwhile, the Bombers have won their last six games over Brookfield, Middlebury, New Fairfield and Newtown’s own Lightning.

Here are the results –

BASEBALL

12 Intro

Reds 6, Ridgefield Landscapers 4 – Strong pitching and defense carried the Newtown Reds to victory Sunday in Ridgefield. Richie Sandler, Kyle Wilcox and John Lebinski scattered five hits over seven innings, with Sandler picking up the win and Lebinski the save. John Hampford (BB) and Sandler (single) scored on an error in the first and then Ben Stoller (single) scored following four walks to Lebinski, Mike Scharfenberg, Nicky Sajovic and Ryan Daignault. Hull scored the next two runs with the aid of some nifty baserunning (not to mention a single by Wilcox).

Reds 8, Ridgefield Bankers 8 – The Reds dominated the entire game Saturday but squandered an 8-2 lead in the final inning. Newtown pitchers John Lebinski, Jon Hull and Nicky Sajovic allowed just two hits over five innings and were helped by four outstanding plays by center fielder Kyle Wilcox, who ranged to right center to track down a hard hit ball for the final out with the bases loaded in the first inning. He made three other outstanding plays and also knocked in two runs with a double and a groundout. Stoller, Sajovic and Lebinski (double) all drove in runs. Ryan Daignault reached base four consecutive times, drawing four walks, stealing four bases and scoring one run.

Bombers 11, Lightning 2 – The Bombers exploded for seven hits and seven runs in the fourth inning to blow open a close game. Nick Randle, Joey Carrino and Patrick Conte had the big hits in the inning, each driving in two runs. David Berquist started another three run rally in the fifth inning with a line drive double down the left field line. For the Lightning Michael Parker pitched two strong innings, Matthew St. Jean and Declan Sullivan singled, and, Owen Samson and Patrick Berger each stole a base.

Bombers 7, Brookfield 5 – Down by one run going into the sixth inning, the Bombers rallied for three runs to come away with the victory. Gustavo Porto led off the inning with a walk. Julia Monaco followed with a single. Both runners then advanced on a throwing error. Porto scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Monaco than stole third and as the throw skipped past the third baseman, scurried home for the go-ahead run. The Bombers then tacked on two more insurance runs in the inning. Dave Matthews clubbed two hits to lead the offense and Joe Duero shut Brookfield down in the last inning to earn the victory.

Bombers 10, Middlebury 4 – Patrick Conte pitched two strong innings and clubbed two base hits to lead the Bombers. Joe Duero blasted a bases loaded triple. Valentino Diorio singled and stole two bases. Jack Procaccini showed his versatility when he stroked two singles, walked ,stole four bases, scored two runs and came in to pitch the Bombers out of a bases loaded jam to earn the save.

Bombers 18, Middlebury (#2) 7 – The Bombers were powered by David Matthews, who slugged a grand slam in the second inning. Not to be outdone, Patrick Conte celebrated his birthday with a three-run blast in the fifth. Nick Randle stroked two hits and scored three runs.

Bombers 18, New Fairfield (#4) 7 – Patrick Conte led the Bombers with three hits and three runs scored. Richard Ciamarra pitched well and added a hit and two runs scored. Bobby Katrinak reached base three times, stole two bases and scored a run.

Bombers 19, New Fairfield (#1) 6 – The Bombers played flawless defense making as they rolled to their eighth consecutive victory. Austin Martinez laced a single, scored a run and pitched a shutout inning. Jack Procaccini ripped a triple to lead off the bottom of the first, had three hits in all and scored three runs. Joe Duero contributed two hits and pitched his fourth straight scoreless inning.

Gators 10, Gladiators 6 – The undefeated Gators (6-0) rallied back in the late innings to defeat the Gladiators. Sam Czel pitched a strong game, Kyle McGrath pitched well and singled in a run, and Justin Appley, Mason Melillo and Nathan Wutzke had timely hits. For the Gladiators, Luke Rustici pitched well as Glen Damota had two hits and three RBI to pace the offense. Paul Whitaker, Shawn McCarthy, and Austin Huffman each collected a hit.

Lightning 14, Brookfield 2 – Zach Aumueller and Michael Parker had doubles to power the Lightning. Pete Clifford, Declan Sullivan and Matthew Ingwersen all had key hits and RBIs as Owen Samson and Matthew Stewart combined for five walks and Michael Ziluck stole a base.

Monroe 10, Lightning 3 – Stephen Brittin, Declan Sullivan and Zach Aumueller pitched well for Newtown in a loss to Monroe. Declan Sullivan had a hit and Matthew St. Jean made a nice catch in left filed to end a Monroe rally.

Gladiators 17, New Fairfield 5 – Alex Klang went 3-for-3, including a home run and five RBI, to lead the Gladiator offense. Luke Rustici chipped in with three hits while Daniel Pearson and Alex Daignault collected two hits apiece. Defensively, Paul Whitaker and Austin Huffman played well in the field while Klang and Spencer Johnson struck out seven New Fairfield batters in three innings of work.

Gladiators 14, New Fairfield 2 – Dylan Tyrrell and Paul Whitaker collected two hits each with Tyrrell knocking in four RBI to lead the Gladiator offense. Alex Daignault and Brian Kerins reached base five times showing good patience at the plate. Defensively, Glen Damota made a nice play at short to force a runner at second while Daignault threw two batters out at first while pitching in the last inning. Luke Rustici struck out four batters over two innings and Whitaker two batters in one inning of work.

SOFTBALL

U12

Red Hot Hitters 13, Green Team 12 – Shaina Stamp and Carley Ferris had two hits apiece to lead the Hitters. Ashley Headen made great defensive plays at second base as Julia Frattaroli and Carley Ferris combined to pitch their team to the win. For the Green Team, Kimmy Gates, Nadia El-Hag and Kayla O’grady combined to pitch well for the first start of the fall season. Katy Tomascak played a strong defensive game while Olivia Sergiovanni provided the offensive spark at the plate.

Blue Flames 16, Red Hot Hitters 7 – Alena Ruscoe and Julia LeBlanc pitched well as Rachel DiVanno played well at first to lead the Flames to the win. Maddy Good and Mariah Joy hit the ball hard. For the Red Hot Hitters, Cassie Ekstrom had three hits while Melanie Rotate had two. Vicky Kokoszka and Cassie Ekstrom both pitched well while Lindsay Fuori at third and Ivy Lee at second made great plays in the field.
