SHS Summer Challenge Sparks Involvement

Over 100 Sandy Hook Elementary students took this year’s Summer Challenge literally. The students had a board game with 25 to 20 language arts, math, and science questions that they had to answer over the summer.

Assistant Principal Cathy Mazzariello was excited about the response students had to the Summer Challenge.

“I’m thrilled,” she said. “I hope more children will do it each year. It’s a lot of work. We used to do Summer Bingo which was far less work.”

With the board game challenge, students were able to pick and choose what challenges they wanted to complete. All the subjects were represented by a shape and once a student completed a challenge they wrote the date inside the shape.

There were three rewards students could earn by completing some or all of the summer challenges. The first tier was to have your picture taken for the Wall of Fame. In order to achieve this students had to complete one-third of the challenges. Tier two was a field day, Go For the Gold adventure, and students had to complete two-thirds of the challenges. Finally, to have a picnic lunch, students had to complete all of the challenges for tier three.
