U10

Westport 6, Newtown Funky Monkeys 1: While it may have been humid enough for actual monkeys, the Funky Monkeys were not so pleased. Westport was able to cage the Monkey offense entirely on their side of the field and snuck in a trio of goals in the first half. In the second half, Olivia Oltran received a nice pass from Simone Paradis to get the Funky ones on the board. Mary Celentano and Maddie Stites kept pushing forward, and goalkeeper McKenna Cuomo came up with some great saves.

U11

Dynamite 6, Darien 0 (State Cup game): From the opening whistle, the girls put pressure on the Darien defense and never let up. Brooke Antous opened the game with a goal a couple of minutes in, and Katie Sailer netted the next goal. In the second half, Lauren Carrino fired the ball into the back of the net, and Antous assisted Keeley Kortze with a goal to bring the score to 4-0. Sailer added two more back-to-back goals for the hat trick to bring the final score to 6-0. The Dynamites also saw aggressive play from Rebecca Gavel and Lu Hage.

Sparks 9, Easton-Redding Passion 4: Carly Swierbut took the ball upfield on a breakaway and passed to Emily Celentano who scored the first goal. A penalty shot from a handball called inside the box led to the Sparks’ second goal, scored by Emma Curtis. Swierbut added her own goal and the final goal of the half came from Veronica Vodola off a corner kick from Angela Vodola. First half goalie Jackie Seras had multiple saves. In the second half, the Sparks got two quick goals from Celentano, the first off an assist from Curtis and the second off an assist from Angela Vodola. Veronica Vodola, Celentano and Swierbut also added goals. Sarah Widmann and Angela Vodola played well in goal.

U12

Panthers 1, Westport 0, overtime (State Cup game): The Panther offense was aggressive as Dani Otero and Elizabeth Chamiec-Case pushed the ball upfield. Charlie Condon teamed up with Kaitlyn Reilly and Juliette Grover for several attempts at goal. Lauren Russo scored her first goal with an assist by Charli Condon. Fine footwork by Mary Hufziger, Kiera Kelly and Diana Kirkman left the Westport players dazed as the Panther’s defense held strong during regular play. Audrey Sedensky made it look easy as she answered every advancement by the opponent. Priya Deraney, Greta Staubly and Bryanna Benson ran down the ball and pushed back the Westport offense at every turn. Lauren Russo rebounded the ball for her final goal in overtime sealing Westport’s fate. Outstanding goal tending by Alex Futterman and Maria Ringes rounded out excellent play by the Panthers.

Panthers 2, Monroe 0: Lauren Russo connected for the first goal with an assist from Charlie Condon and Dani Otero. Caitlin Riley demonstrated her quiet confidence by connecting for the second goal. Fine footwork and first touches by Elizabeth Chamiec-Case and Allie Paynter kept the pressure on Monroe. Outstanding defense came from the frontlines made up of Audrey Sedensky, Kira Kelly, Catherine Shaw and Diana Kirkman. Juliet Grover, Bryanna Benson and Mary Hifziger pushed the ball deep into Monroe territory, while Greta Staubly and Priya Deraney answered upfield advancements with defensive pressure. The fearless goaltending by Alex Futterman and Maria Ringes proved to be the final blow for Monroe.

U13

Newtown Thunder 1, Darien White 0 (State Cup game): Newtown prevailed in the first round of the State Cup tournament by winning the shootout 4-3. The Thunder dominated this contest, with midfields/forwards Amanda Albanese, Claire Beiter, Julia Sughrue, Ali Manfredi, Kendra Dunnigan, Stef Carr, Emily Neeve and Taylor Pare keeping the ball in the Darien zone for the majority of the game. Newtown had at least a half dozen legitimate scoring opportunities, but the Darien goalie was superb in turning away shots from Hailey Conrad, Meghan Doyle, Jess Maturo, Mia Katsuleres and Albanese. By contrast, Darien did not have an official shot on goal due to the outstanding defense of Grace Sandercox, Olivia Caplan, Lauren Beier and Emily Montoya. Scoring during the shootout were Sandercox, Dunnigan, Beier and Montoya with the winning goal. Doyle’s intimidating play in goal caused Darien to miss two of their shootout attempts.

U14

Wild Animal Prints 4, Hasta la Vistas 0: The Wild Animal Prints, (sporting pink Zebra stripes), battled it out against the Hasta la Vistas through the first half, taking the lead 1-0 going into half time. The single goal during the first half was made by Liz Weisgerber, after squeezing through two defenders, with a low hard shot. The Hasta la Vistas had great contributions from Bridget McDonald on defense and Emily Booth and Mary-Kathryn in midfield. During the second half, the prints added on three more goals by Zoe Ivan, Joanelle Tran and Margo Elkins.

Hasta la Vistas 2, American Eagles 0: Sophia Albano and Samantha Olah combined for two goals as the Hasta la Vistas edged the American Eagles by a score of 2-0. Keira Veillette supported the away team with excellent midfield play, while Emily Toby anchored a strong defense. For the American Eagles, Caroline Viselli and Grace Sholtes played well in the midfield slots. The defense was anchored by the strong play of Izzy Kaiser and MacKenzie Macchiarulo who deflected multiple attaches on goal by a strong opponent. Kaysie Fisher and Savannah Davidow both played excellent in goal.

Ninjas 0, NoNames 0: In a much anticipated rematch of last week’s game, the Ninjas and NoNames battled to a 0-0 tie despite numerous scoring chances for both sides. For the Ninjas, Sarah MacMullan and Rachel Tomasino led the offense with several scoring chances and their tenacious play, while Rachael DiCristina, Jessica Cruz and Olivia Butler controlled the midfield with their accurate passing and tireless pursuit of the ball. Alexandra Reczek led her team’s determined defensive efforts with several critical tackles in key moments of the game. Goalkeeper Taylor Clomiro preserved the tie by making several key saves in the final minutes. The No Names were led by great offensive play from Caroline Cole, Rachel Jacuzzi and Holly LaCascio and a tremendous defensive effort from Janyce Toth, Alexis Tucker and Melissa Shohet. Madeline Marlin provided strong goaltending.

Boys

U8

Sponge Bobs 5, Firehawks 2: The Sponge Bobs defeated the Firehawks 5-2 behind the outstanding five-goal effort of Tanner Trede. The Sponge Bobs’ defense was led by Andrew Michlovitz, Andrew Bazuro and Jack Petersen who was great in goal. Cameron Petrelli and Torin Kearney both had assists, while Ben Paley and Ethan Paley controlled the midfield. The Fire Hawks mounted an aggressive offense with Gregory Gargano scoring on an assist from Mathew Jacobs. Justin Zemo also scored. Jacob Anthony, Dylan Geiling, Andrew Jacobs and Brendan Adams had great efforts for the team. On the defensive side, Sam Peterson, Cody Meir and Charlie Sepp were solid. Jacob Anthony and Brendan Adams, Cody Meir, Charlie Sepp and Greg Gargano played well in goal.

Team Four 5, Team Eight 3: For Team Four, Jake Gonski scored two goals and Brendan O’Neill, Richard Guman and Matthew Weisgerber also scored. Eric Vine and Zach Ziperstein played extremely well, and Benjamin Davis made some great saves in goal late in the game to help hold onto the lead. For Team Eight, Hayden Miller scored two goals and kept the pressure on goal even as a fullback. Aidan Hall scored with a hard shot from the edge of the goalie box. Adri Wadhwa, Sean O’Sullivan and Zack Majeski assisted on offense with great shots on the goal. The Team Eight goal was defended well by Jake Holme, Sean O’Sullivan, Hayden Miller and Cooper Hider.

Team Five 4, Wolverines 2: Neil Kalra scored two first-half goals for the Wolverines. Trevor Hislop played well defensively, but the Wolverines fell short.

Kickers 5, Blue Eagles 1: The Kickers played another solid game with great passing and terrific defense. CJ Cuomo, Brandon Manka, and Ryan Poupon all scored while Ryder Palumbo scored two of his own. Daniel Delia and Nicholas Psichopaidas played great all-around games assisting on multiple scores and leading the defense. The Blue Eagles were led by Connor Faxon who had a goal to begin the scoring and played excellently in the net. Andre Boily had several shots on goal that narrowly missed. Sam Staubly and Johnny Moxham played good hard defense. Elijah Baraw and Dylan Petrillo also showed great hustle for the team.

U11

Vipers 3, Stamford Hurricanes 0: Dylan Sock scored the first goal with an assist from Adam Farley. Farley scored the second goal off a pass from Owen Sullivan. The final goal was a left-footed blast from Harvey Long off a pass from Farley. Excellent defensive protection was provided by Sean Arnold, Jack McDermott and Danny Schreiber. Goalie CJ Trivers provided excellent protection in the goal. Colin Dunn, Travis Huzina and Bryce Bisset provided support in the midfield and offense.

U14

Geese 4, Water Buffalos 2: Despite the excellent defensive efforts led by Jeroen Schickendantz, the Water Buffalos were defeated by the Geese. Casper DeWit and Dillon Palumbo each scored one goal for the Water Buffalos, while Daniel Reilly performed well on defense. For the Geese, Tim Vanderhave scored three goals, and another goal was scored by Nick Bourgoius, who also shut out the Buffalos while in goal. Spence Tolson anchored the Geese’s defense.
