‘We’ve Got Talent’

Will Hit The Stage October 9

By Kendra Bobowick

Throughout town artists are tuning guitars, warming their voices, and practicing talent routines.

Newtown Cultural Arts Commission will present We’ve Got Talent, a music and variety show, at Newtown High School on Saturday, October 9, beginning at 7:30 pm. The show, the first of its kind to be hosted by NCAC, will include a spectrum of entertainment from the Newtown community.

“There are so many talented people in Newtown and we wanted as many as possible to perform,” said NCAC Chair Jennifer Johnston. “Everyone has a hidden talent. We’re pulling artists from the woodwork to perform in the local arena.”

Growing more excited as the debut approaches, she noted the heart of the show: “I look forward to bringing together children, adults, and performing artist mentors.”

Commission member and event coordinator Donna Monteleone-Randle explained, “Our goal is to present an intergenerational show with student members to professionals.”

The show, a fundraiser for the commission, will celebrate the talents of Newtown residents and friends across the generations, Ms Randle said. We’ve Got Talent will showcase music, dance, comedy, solo performances, local celebrities, and more.

She hopes proceeds will help to purchase microphones, lighting, or other equipment for the schools, and perhaps generate scholarship funds.

“This is the kick-off!” said Phyllis Cortese, a resident, parent, and event participant.

“We’re pooling talent. It’s a great opportunity and has brought together different children to collaborate,” said Ms Cortese, who is coordinating her son Dylan’s gospel choir act. The group will perform “Puff the Magic Dragon” and Leonard Cohen’s arrangement of “Hallelujah.”

Dylan saw Peter Yarrow perform, which left a strong impression, his mother explained. Ms Cortese was also a huge fan of Peter, Paul and Mary when she grew up.

“That’s what engaged me in music,” she said. She recalls that her son “became excited at Mr Yarrow’s music and he just knew” that his talent performance would reflect Mr Yarrow’s work.

In addition to the Corteses, group members are Music Director Jim Allyn, Caitlin Gibney, Jordan Williams, Hailey Williams, Miranda Wakeman, Isabella Wakeman, Jerusha Wright, Max Galassi, Kyle Watkins, and Hunter James.

Newtown Middle School Drama Director Susan Lang became involved “because I thought it would be fun, and I wanted to give something back to the town where I grew up and was educated.” Ms Lang auditioned earlier this year, when Ms Randle asked her to head a group.

“Donna asked if I would be willing to work with some students,” said Ms Lang. “I’m delighted to be working with three young people who love music, each in his or her own way. It’s very cool to see them all work together, teach each other, share their various knowledge...great teamwork!”

A group of acoustic guitarists, her act will perform original tunes by one of its members as well as a Beatles song.

Although Ms Lang has not seen the other acts yet, she does know some students who are involved.

“I know there is a ton of talent among the middle school and high school set. I can’t wait to see what they all have put together,” said Ms Lang, who is working with Gillian Chanko, Tim Vanderhave, and Devin Peterson.

A host of acts await their turn in the spotlight.

Organizers are still seeking volunteers to help with the performance.

Tickets are $15, students and seniors are $10, with preschool children free of charge. Tickets will be available at the door. Call 203-426-9299 or visit www.NewtownArtsCommission.org for additional information.
