6th Annual Passport Event Celebrated Sandy Hook Center

The 6th Annual Passport to Sandy Hook, presented by the Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (SHOP), had many people making their way between businesses on Saturday, October 8.The Winners & Their Prizes

Members of the community were encouraged to venture to participating businesses and activities in Sandy Hook Center to have their "passport" - a list of the participating stops - stamped. Visitors who had each of the stops in the event stamped were then eligible to enter a raffle to win one of three prize packages comprising donations from local residents and businesses. The first place winner was Dori Marx, the second place winner was Janice Cummings, and third place winner was Bernadette Lund.

As the Bobby Donaldson Band took a brief break from playing, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" began to play from speakers. Soon dancers from The Graceful Planet made their way into the center of the main intersection of Church Hill Road and Washington Avenue. Some wore spooky makeup, but all of them began to dance, drawing attention from the crowd.

Unclaimed Baggage also performed during Saturday's event.

Among the day's activities and booths were popcorn sales by Boy Scout Troop 170, a Stuff-A-Truck challenge to benefit FAITH Food Pantry hosted by Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, crafts and fall treats at Figs Woods Fired Bistro, a bounce house and crafts at Newtown United Methodist Church, open houses at a number of locations such as Porco's Karate Academy, and samples and specials of food and drinks at a number of restaurants.

The next event being presented by SHOP will be the 6th Annual Sandy Hook Halloween Walk on Saturday, October 29, from 11 am 2 pm. Costumed children will be welcomed at businesses and booths within the business district, where they will be treated with small goodies.

The first winner from the Passport to Sandy Hook was Dori Marx, who won ten tickets and use of the Newtown Savings Bank Suite  at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport for an October 23 performance of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, all from Newtown Savings Bank; two tickets for the October 21 Anderson-Rabin-Wakeman concert at Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford; a gift certificate for ten adult classes from The Graceful Planet; one month of free karate instruction from Porco Karate Academy; a candle compliments of Billy Ceglia Designs; a Visa gift card compliments of The Children's Adventure Center; two gift certificates to both Figs Wood Fired Bistro and Foundry Kitchen & Tavern; and gift certificates to Green Crystal Massage, Cover Two Sports Café, Sandy Hook Diner, GCS Computer, Nouveau Monde Wine Bar, Sabrina Style, and Subway.

The prize package was valued at $1,584.

The second winner was Janice Cummings, who also won ten tickets and use of the Newtown Savings Bank Suite at Arena at Harbor Yard for an October 23 performance of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus; one month of free karate instruction at Porco Karate Academy; and gift certificates from Cover Two Sports Cafe, Figs Wood Fired Bistro, Cover Two Sports Café, Figs Wood Fired Bistro, Family Fun Kuts, Foundry Kitchen & Tavern, GCS Computer, Nouveau Monde Wine Bar, and Sandy Hook Hair Company.

Her prize package, which was valued at $1,245, also included a family four-pack of tickets for a performance of "Octonaughts Live" on November 25 at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, courtesy of Live Nation; a gift certificate from Kirsten Bazuro, Independent Jamberry Consultant; a certificate to Jackie Gaudet's Voice Studio for a 45-minute voice lesson; a Newtown Forest Association T-shirt; a gift certificate from Nick's Chilled & Distilled good for a bottle of the limited edition Patron Reposado; a laundry bag and a $50 gift certificate towards wash, fold, dry from PJ's Laundromat; and a 30-minute mini session from Sandra Lynn Photography.

The third winner was Bernadette Lund, who also won also won a gift certificate to Jackie Gaudet's Voice Studio for a 45-minute voice lesson;  one month of free karate instruction at Porco Karate Academy; two gift certificates to Cover Two Sports Cafe; a gift certificate from Nick's Chilled & Distilled good for a bottle of the limited edition Patron Reposado; gift certificates to Figs Wood Fired Bistro, Foundry Kitchen & Tavern, GCS Computer, Nouveau Monde Wine Bar, Sandy Hook Diner, and Subway.

In addition, the gift package (valued at $1,120) also included a gift certificate for a Mom & Baby Class from Newtown Suzuki;  tickets to attend a pasta dinner at Newtown United Methodist Church; a gift certificate for a Christmas tree from Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company; and a gift certificate from Wesley Learning Center good toward new enrollment, plus stickers and a small toy.
