RIDGEFIELD — Newtown’s ska/reggae/punk band The Screw Ups, who got their start at The Teen Center in 2005 — and returned to that location to perform a show just a few months ago — will be the opening act for The English Beat at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Tuesday, October 22, at 8 pm. The English Beat is an internationally known ska band out of England.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at Ridgefieldplayhouse.org/event/english-beat. Learn more about The Screw Ups and band members Nico Bonvini, Julian Wahlberg, Kyle Kearney, and Dave Manville at Screwupsband.bandcamp.com.

“We are so happy to be opening for a great band,” said Mr Bonvini.

“We are really excited to be playing with ska legends. We love the two-tone style, and it has been a big influence on us,” he added. While the night will be memorable for The Screw Ups as musicians, Mr Bonvini is also eager to “put our sound out there and compliment one of the greats,” he said.

The Screw Ups — all 2008 Newtown High School graduates — have been enjoying a growing success since their first show eight years ago at the Church Hill Road location. The band has grown despite distance from one another, and from venues in Boston and Rhode Island.

Since graduation they have become popular in the Massachusetts and New England areas. Bass player Kyle Kearney and drummer Dave Manville now live in Boston, while alto sax player Nico Bonvini and guitarist and songwriter Julian Wahlberg live in town.
