Newtown Continuing Education has limited openings available in the following classes. Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787, 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday, for further information on dates, times, and location, or visit newtowncontinuinged.org.

Reiki — A three-class course being offered October 23, 24, and 25, 7 pm to 9 pm, $299. This is a Reiki I certification course. Students will learn the Reiki precepts, which invite a creative lifestyle that is productive and compassionate, without accumulating a burden of stress. Students will learn a simple meditation that they can practice each day to promote peace of mind, as well as the hand positions for a self-Reiki treatment. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion, and does not require anyone to believe in anything they do not experience during the practice. Finally, Reiki can bring about transformative effects on the physical level, but is not a replacement for conventional medical care.

Browsing The Internet Effectively — A one-class course on October 24, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, $39. Internet browsers let us enjoy the wealth of content available on the internet. Join the class to learn about using internet browsers to get around the internet. The most popular browsers, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox will be compared. The class will discuss browsing techniques, using search engines, adding favorites, using browser tabs, setting a home page, clearing cookies, staying safe, and much more.

Concerned And/Or Confused About Medical Insurance And Medicare? — A two-class course on October 23 and 25, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, $49. This is an expanded class with two sessions and includes more Medicare Plan analysis and discussion along with a guest speaker. It is designed for people approaching age 65 who have questions and concerns about Medicare and related medical, dental, vision, silver sneakers, and long term care insurance. It puts into perspective the TV and media advertising, home mailers, and more that share information about Medicare Part A, B, C, & D Supplements/Medigap and Advantage Plans, the Red-White-Blue Book, and more.

Paint Your Pet — A one-class course on October 24, 6 pm to 8:30 pm, $69. Imagine the thrill of having the image of a precious fur baby captured on a 12-by-12-inch canvas. Students should not worry if they have never sketched before or that their artwork is geared more to a game of Pictionary. The class will guarantee that the finished result will mirror the pet. After students submit an electronic, clear, close-up photo, of their pet after registering, Color On Wheels will send the files to the artist, who will transfer a pencil sketch of the outline and features onto the canvas. On the evening of class, the instructor will guide students to paint the background and then work with individuals to paint and shade to create the image of their loved one. Serger Sewing Basics — A two-class course starting October 25, 6 pm to 8 pm, $79. Sarah McFarland, editor of Threads Magazine, will show students how to use their Serger machine confidently. The class will cover what each part does and how to set up a Serger. Learn how to thread it, how to achieve different finishes, hem garments, use the differential feed, and how to adjust the settings. Students will be come comfortable with their Serger and discover how to use its best features. Students should bring their Serger machine with manual, any accessories, and thread to class. The instructor will provide general sewing supplies (pins, scissors, and scrap fabric) for practice. The class is limited to six students.

Make The Best First Impression — A one-class course on October 25, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, $49. In this one-hour presentation, the class will cover extraordinary resources, interview tips, the dos and don’ts of applying for jobs, how to make the best first impression to potential employers, and much more.

Word Part 1 — A three-class course starting October 29, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, $99. Learn the basics to successfully use Microsoft Word, the best-selling word processing computer software. Learn how to create and edit documents, how to format a document, how to use the spellcheck and thesaurus, how to cut/copy/paste, and how to use many other features. No prior word processing knowledge is necessary, but a basic knowledge of computers is helpful.

Yoga With Karen — A five-class course starting October 31, 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm, $55. Unwind from a stress-filled day with a relaxing evening of yoga. Transform from tense and tight to mellow and limber. This yoga practice is designed to lengthen and stretch breath. Wear sweatpants and bring an exercise/yoga mat. A yoga strap and yoga block are optional. The instructor is a master yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and Yoga Teacher Trainer; she will teach students how to create authentic personal practices.

You And Your Money — A one-class course on October 30, 6 pm to 7:30 pm, $29. This workshop will help students on a path to smart money management. The tools they will learn will help them gain control over their finances. They will create or update their spending plan to put them on a path for better money management. They will learn how to create and use a budget and borrow wisely to make sure they are planning for a successful financial future. They will develop a plan for savings, and they will be better prepared to make large purchases or for emergencies, like an unexpected car expense.

Andy Warhol Exhibit At The Whitney Museum Of American Art — A day trip on Sunday, November 18, departing Newtown at approximately 8:30 am, $99. New York City’s Whitney Museum of American Art is planning the city’s first comprehensive Andy Warhol retrospective in nearly 30 years. This limited-time exhibition will span all media and periods of the artist’s career, including his early commercial illustrations from the 1950s, his experimental films from the 1970s, and his somewhat maligned shadow and skull paintings from the late 1970s. Come and experience the largest solo exhibition to date in the Whitney’s Meatpacking District building. Lunch will be “on your own” at either the nearby Chelsea Market or at Brookfield Place. No discounts apply.
