Newtown High School's boys' soccer team heads into the postseason riding a five-game unbeaten streak and, with an overall record of 12-2-2 and South-West Conference mark of 10-2-1, is the conference tournament's third seed. The Nighthawks are scheduled to host seventh-seeded Pomperaug of Southbury in the quarterfinals, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on Saturday, October 28, beginning at 7 pm.

The Nighthawks edged Pomperaug 1-0 in a home game on October 5.

This past week, the Nighthawks held a trio of opponents scoreless in earning two wins and a tie. They blanked host Stratford 8-0 in an October 19 contest, nipped visiting Old Lyme 1-0 at Blue & Gold on October 21, and closed out the regular campaign with a scoreless draw at Bethel on October 23.

In the triumph over Stratford, Newtown piled up 19 shots at the goal. Nighthawk goalkeeper CJ Trivers made one save; Michael Greenspan got time between the posts and stopped four shots to help preserve the shutout.

Rilind Limani scored first with the assist by Thomas Skrelja. Jack Oltran scored the next four goals, all in the first half. Owen Baillargeon, Jalen Minter, Bryce Benson, and Aidan Ford all logged assists on Oltran tallies. In the second half, Brendan O'Hara scored on a long shot, assisted by Tom Shkreli. The next Newtown net-finder came when Stratford scored on its own goal. Benson, assisted by Duncan O'Leary, capped the scoring.

In a nonconference battle with Old Lyme, it was as if the field was tilted with the Nighthawks piling up chance after chance. Skrelja was denied by a diving save as he, Baillargeon, Oltran, and O'Hara created numerous opportunities. The Hawks compiled eight corner kicks in the first half alone. They finally broke the ice with 8:11 left before the break when Adam Farley led Oltran, commonly referred to as "Goaltron" by PA Announcer Jason "J" Edwards. Oltran did the rest, getting around the Old Lyme keeper and hitting the back of the net for the game's only goal.

Against Bethel, Trivers had five saves. The Hawks held opponents without a goal 11 times this fall.

If the Hawks defeat Pomperaug, they will play either No. 2 Masuk of Monroe or No. 7 Brookfield in the Wednesday, November 1, semifinals. Newtown fell 2-1 at Masuk and tied Brookfield 1-1 at Treadwell Park during the regular slate.
