Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ soccer teams both won their South-West Conference tournament quarterfinal-round games, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 26.

The fourth-seeded boys avenged a regular-season loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield with a 1-0 win over the fifth-seeded Lancers to advance to the semis.

Bryce Benson’s unassisted first-half goal stood up thanks to Newtown’s patience on defense allowing the Lancers to possess the ball for much of the match while not allowing them many threats to score.

Newtown will visit No. 1 Weston, a 1-0 winner over Immaculate of Danbury, in the next round, Monday, October 29, at 7 pm.

The Nighthawks beat Weston 1-0 on October 5.

On the girls’ pitch, the top-seeded Nighthawks defeated No. 8 Joel Barlow of Redding 3-0. Karsen Pirone scored in the first half, and Sydney Howard off an assist from Ally McCarthy, and Emma Curtis notched goals in the second half.

The girls’ booters will host No. 5 Immaculate on Tuesday, October 30 at 7 o’clock.
