GREENWICH, CONN. â âThe good news is that we have the goods,â stated Gene Shannon 24 hours prior to the start of Shannonâs fine art auction on October 23. American art dominated throughout the $2.7 million evening sale, with a Jasper Cropsey luminous landscape leading the way.
The painting, consigned from a private Connecticut collection where it had remained through two generations, was classic âHudson Riverâ in every detail and considered a masterpiece by the Hastings on Hudson, N.Y., artist.
An autumn view titled âHomestead on Greenwood Lake,â the dated 1886 painting measured 18½ by 38¼ inches and retained the original frame. Two phone bidders slugged it out for the Cropsey with a private Connecticut collector claiming the lot at $396,000.
A Colin Campbell Cooper also did well, with a Parisian Impressionist scene of the âPlace de LâOpera, Paris,â selling at $120,000.
A complete report will appear in a future issue.
