Swim Team Ends Regular Season With Victory At Masuk

In its final meet of the regular season, Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team defeated host Masuk of Monroe, 92-83, on October 27. The Nighthawks, who were coming off a 96-83 loss at Brookfield, on October 23, finish the year with a 7-3 record. Now, they’ll prepare for the postseason, which begins with South-West Conference championship action in early November.

Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin said his team swam well against a tough Brookfield team, which posted an 8-2 mark.

Against Masuk (7-4 overall and 5-4 in the conference), the Nighthawks jumped out to the early lead as the 200 yard medley relay team of Megan Olszewski, Emma Brantl, Casey Klein, and Mary Hufziger finished first in a time of 2:01.90.

Cecelia Schoeni won the 200 freestyle race, making her final touch in 2:10.39. Brantl won the 200 individual medley race in 2:28.28. Hufziger and Gianna Terracino gave Newtown a one-two finish in the 50 free with times of 26.56 and 28.02.

Newtown had the top three divers as Gillian Eckwall earned a score of 234.35, Sarah MacMullan had a score of 177.05, and Kiera Sughrue earned a score of 166.35.

Hufziger won the 100 yard free in a time of 57.81. The Nighthawks had the fastest three swimmers in the 500 freestyle event. Maddie Carter was first in 5:45.15, Bridget Duero was second in 5:45.22, and Schoeni placed third in 6:03.34.

The 200 free relay team of Klein, Terracino, Brantl, and Hufziger was first in 1:49.57. Newtown, having sealed up the team victory, exhibitioned the final three events.
