Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

Upcoming Programs

*The Newtown Senior Center will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans’ Day and also Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving.

*What Your Jeweler Never Told You SEMINAR on Thursday, November 12, at 1 pm. Learn the guidelines of proper care, selling, investing, insurance guidelines and estate planning, all relating to jewelry.

*COMMISSION ON AGING  will meet on Monday, November 16, at 5 pm.

*AARP Driver Safety Program will be Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. This is a refresher course. You must attend both days. AARP members, $12 and nonmembers, $14.

*BINGO will be Thursday, November 17 and November 25 at 1 pm.

*LARRY AYCE will perform old time and new favorites to sing along and/or dance to on Monday, November 30, at 1 pm.

 *SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, December 8, Annual Christmas Party at The Waterview.

 

Day Trips

*Visit MOHEGAN SUN on Monday, November 9 or Thursday, December 10. Depart at 8 am. Cost is $30.

*On Wednesday, November 18, depart at 9:45 am to WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE for lunch and to see the play 42nd Street. Cost is $90.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 2 pm.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise class, PM Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of

November 2–6

Monday: Oven fried chicken quarter, baked macaroni and cheese, winter blend vegetables, corn bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Roast pork with gravy, mashed potato, cut green beans, applesauce garnish, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Spaghetti and meatballs in marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, tossed salad with cucumber and ranch dressing, Italian bread, mandarin oranges.

Thursday: Veal roulade with gravy, mashed potato, Italian blend vegetables, garlic bread, grape juice, pears.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: November 9: Italian wedding soup, grilled chicken, Caesar salad with tomato, croutons and dressing, soft breadstick, peaches.

Tuesday: November 10: All American hamburger on roll with tomato and pickle slices, baked beans, coleslaw, apple pie.
