Even with the cessation of rain and lessening of winds, more Eversource customers in Newtown were without power and more of the town's roads were partially or totally blocked with downed wires or trees by 5 pm Monday than had been affected earlier in the day, before a storm that had settled over the region during the Sunday-Monday overnight began moving away from the area.

By Monday morning, 18 road closures had been reported, according to Joe Tani, operations manager for Newtown Highway Department.

Around 9 am, Eversource was reporting 920 power outages in town, representing 8 percent of its 11,070 Newtown customers.

When the Town of Newtown issued an email to update residents at 4:45, both of those numbers had increased rather than decreased.

"Newtown now has approximately 1,500 reported power outages and 27 roads that are totally or partially blocked with downed wires or trees," the e-mail sent out by town officials reported. "According to the Eversource spokesperson, the additional outages are caused by wind gusts this morning and afternoon and the process of clearing wires and trees. The outages and blocked roads are in areas throughout the town.

"Eversource crews and public works crews are on site in many locations, performing damage assessments and planning recovery," the update continued. "These crews will continue to work through the night."

An additional update from the town can be expected later Monday or early Tuesday morning.

According to data collected by a Wunderground weather station located on Queen Street, 4.98 inches of rain fell in the center of town on Sunday, October 29. Another 0.73 inches was collected at that location on Monday, October 30, as of 5 pm.

Residents awoke on Monday to roads filled with leaves and branches, the aftermath of the overnight's heavy winds and rain. Many residents also found trees had fallen, often taking utility wires with them. By 9 am Monday, the town's firefighters had responded to more than 40 calls for wires down.

Fortunately, there were no injuries and very little structural damage reported as a result of the storm. One detached garage in Sandy Hook was damaged Sunday shortly before 11 pm, when a tree reportedly fell on it.

The town's public schools and many of its preschools and daycare centers were closed on Monday, in large part due to the large number of roads closed in the wake of the storm.
