Free Equipment For Schools

SPRINGFIELD, MA — On October 30, Big Y World Class Markets’ shoppers will start earning points toward free educational supplies and equipment for their schools through Big Y’s Education Express program.

This is a program created to help community schools earn the educational equipment and materials. When Big Y shoppers use their Express Savings Club card to purchase a variety of specially marked Education Express items in stores, these purchases earn points for the school of their choice. Schools can then redeem their points for any of the 200 most-requested teaching materials educators and students need most — anything from computers and software to books to sports equipment.

“At Big Y, we believe in the importance of educating all children. We are committed to our communities and our children with programs such as Homework Helpline and Education Express,” Donald D’Amour, CEO of Big Y World Class Markets said. “Through these programs, our children and their schools acquire valuable information and the educational tools that may otherwise not be available to them. Our goal is to give away over four million dollars in educational equipment in order to provide an educational environment from which students will benefit for a lifetime.”

This round of Education Express will run for 16 months, ending in January 2002. Since its inception in 1994, the Education Express Program has awarded more than $4.5 million worth of teaching materials and classroom equipment to more than 1,800 schools in Big Y’s market area.
