Nighthawk Swim Team Competes In State Open

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team placed 18th in the State Open, which culminated with swimming events at Yale University, on November 21. The Nighthawks scored 89 points as a team. Greenwich, with 581, was first.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Megan Olszewski, Emma Brantl, Casey Klein, and Mary Hufziger placed 21st in 1:57.30, for eight points.

In the 50 yard freestyle race, Hufziger placed 22nd, finishing in 25.63 for three points. Hufziger also earned a spot on the score sheet in the 100 free event, placing 22nd in 54.57 for six points.

Newtown’s 400 free relay team of Gianna Terracino, Bridget Duero, Klein, and Hufziger was 14th in 3:43.52, to earn 26 points.

The Hawks also picked up 46 points in the diving portion of the State Open, at Middletown High, on November 19. Kari Djonne finished second by scoring 488.20 for 27 points, and Gillian Eckwall was ninth with a score of 393.80 for 19 points.

Bridget Duero was part of one of Newtown's two relay teams to score points in the State Open.
