Connecticut Choral Society (CCS) is inviting everyone to calm things down during the hectic holiday season with a song or two. “All Is Calm,” this year’s CCS holiday concert, will offer a musical commemoration of the famous Christmas Truce of 1914.

The program, according to Eric Dale Knapp, artistic director and conductor of CCS, weaves together the stories of World War I soldiers, eyewitness and newspaper accounts, and the music of the day to reflect the magic of the famous Christmas Truce.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 was magical moment during World War I when soldiers on the Western Front paused. The sounds of rifles firing and shells exploding faded and were replaced by the Christmas spirit. Advent hymns and favorite carols were sung from the trenches across enemy lines, and Allied soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in joyous song.

The Christmas Truce came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe, and while fleeting and never repeated, it was a reminder that beneath the brutality of war, the soldiers’ essential humanity endured.

Jenny Dickson, CCS board of trustees president, said the annual offering is “a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit.

The concert will feature the 50 voices of CCS and acclaimed pianist Linda Sweetman-Waters, all under the direction of Maestro Knapp.

Three performances are planned. The first two will be Friday, December 7, at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, December 8, at 3 pm, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street in Newtown. These performances will be preceded by a lecture about The Christmas Truce, one hour before showtime.

The third performance of “All Is Calm” is scheduled for Sunday, December 9, at 3 pm, at North Congregational Church, 11 Main Street North in Woodbury.

Tickets for any performance are $25 in advance for adults, $20 for youth/seniors, and $10 for active or retired members of the military. They may be purchased at ctchoralsociety.com.
