CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITIONS – 1 CUT –

WD/jl set 11-24 #611202

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — The Center for Photography is presenting two new exhibitions, “Shifting the Political: Portraits of Power” and “A Map of Latin American Dreams,” a solo exhibition of work by Martin Weber. Both shows run through December 19.

“Shifting the Political: Portraits of Power” brings together five artists working in photography who shift the viewer’s attention to places not traditionally instilled with the value of power.

Minneapolis-based Paul Shambroom explores the lower levels of the political structure in studied portraits of town council meetings throughout the United States. The artist-team Two Girls Working (Tiffany Ludwig, Jersey City, N.J., and Renee Piechocki, Pittsburgh) engage women through their project “Trappings” in which they conduct interviews on topics of empowerment through gender and clothing. Through his haunting series of photographs “Pli (Fold),” German photographer Tim Lehmacher considers the stylistic conventions used to invoke political power both in sculpture and photography. New York City-based photographer Gillian Laub creates portraits of Israelis and Palestinians citizens who bear physical and psychological scars from the ongoing political conflict.

“A Map Of Latin American Dreams,” a solo exhibition of work by Martin Weber, presents a selection of images from Argentina, Nicaragua, Mexico, the Mexican-USA border, Cuba and Peru. Together Weber’s photographs reveal the complex paths that have led to modern day Latin America and provide a glimpse of its future.

The Center for Photography at Woodstock is at 59 Tinker Street. For information, 845-679-9957 or www.cpw.org.
