To the Editor:Minutes, Police Commission Board Meeting, 3 October 2017:Minutes, Police Commission Board Meeting, 7 November 2017:

Below is an update to the letter printed on September 1 regarding double-lining neighborhood roads without municipal guidelines ("Seeing Double," Letter Hive).

At 2 am, on November 11, road striping contractors painted a double-yellow line on New Lebbon Road. The Public Works Department has directly defied the police commission ruling on the topic of road striping:

"In the absence of an implemented policy DPW should not proceed in double lining streets. Commission Budd said that during next fiscal year, line striping can be prioritized based on traffic studies, the traffic division and heavy volumes."

"Any roads currently unlined should be single lined now"

"Double line should be continued on double lined roads, such as Brushy Hill. Roads with no line should be single lined. Chief Viadero will communicate this to Fred Hurley."

This is tangible evidence that Mr Fred Hurley doesn't retain the capability to lead the Public Works Department, or has deliberately defied the Police Commission, or proves general lack of institutional control within his organization. This comes after he presented inaccurate claims of "Class A" roads, a term the State Highway Department doesn't recognize (and never has).

This example is a small, but visual case study of Newtown's financial acuity and questionable control over specific departments. It should make residents consider what other ways the DPW has recklessly spent tax dollars, and if the organizational efficiency is future-ready.
