PORTLAND MUSEUM WILL DISPLAY ‘NEW ACQUISITIONS DEC. 8

AVV 11-19 #720065

PORTLAND, MAINE — The Portland Museum of Art will present the exhibition “New Acquisitions,” on view December 8–February 10.

Each winter provides the opportunity to look back on and celebrate the museum’s art acquisitions from the preceding year. “New Acquisitions 2007” highlights works of art acquired by the museum since late 2006.

The Maine landscape serves as inspiration for many of the works that entered the collection during this time. Artwork by Frances Hynes and John Walker, along with an oil painting by Nineteenth Century artist Harrison Bird Brown, demonstrate the compelling appeal of subject over the last century. These works join Edward Hopper’s “Monhegan Houses, Maine,” another important 2007 acquisition on view in the museum’s main galleries.

Other collecting highlights in the past year include photography, contemporary prints, an array of German Expressionist prints, a major painting by Frances Cohen Gillespie, rare, early paintings by Charles Codman and William Matthew Prior, and acquisitions from the 2007 Portland Museum of Art Biennial, including works by Tanja Hollander and Jeff Kellar.

The museum is downtown at the corner of High and Congress Streets. For information, www.portlandmuseum.org or 207-775-6148.
