BOSTON, MASS. â The Alpha Gallery presents an exhibition of Wlodzimierz Ksiazekâs newest paintings through January 2.
Ksiazekâs paintings are at once pictorial and sculptural, political and personal, monumental and intimate. In his hands, the universal language of paint tells a story of exile, loss, fragmentation, exhilaration and rebirth.
Using oil paint mixed with cold wax, Ksiazek builds nuanced layers of color and texture on the canvas, incising these layers with gestural troughs that lead the viewer across the painted surface.
The story that Ksiazek tells is in the here and now, but its roots are in something much more ancient. None of his paintings are titled, implying that they are all part of a continuous narrative.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1951, Ksiazek left his native country in 1982 to flee political persecution. By the mid-1980s he was exhibiting his work in the United States and had his first solo exhibition in New York in 1991. This is Ksiazekâs solo exhibition at Alpha Gallery.
