Project Eagle Lands At Sandy Hook School

Since early November Project Eagle, a new student group at Sandy Hook School, has completed multiple community service projects, including a recent trip to Masonicare of Newtown, where the participating students sang for residents.

On Saturday, December 3, the participating students — Nate Wheeler, Shilin Ray, Saahil Ray, Shea Murphy, Keenan Murphy, Brian Pendergast, Victoria Chop, Garrett Wolf, and Remi Pimentel — sang for seniors at Masonicare, formerly Ashlar of Newtown, while accompanied by Sandy Hook School parent Francine Wheeler on the piano.

Sandy Hook School parent Jennifer Taylor said the group’s performance at Masonicare was held to thank the residents for offering help to the community following Tropical Storm Irene and Winter Storm Alfred.

According to Ms Taylor, the intent of Project Eagle is to engage third and fourth grade students in service efforts that help the Newtown community. It is a PTA-sponsored program and is being led by Sandy Hook School parent Rashi Ray.

Other community projects completed by the group included creating works of art to give to Danbury Hospital, clearing the path for a trail at the Conservation Commission’s property on Pole Bridge Road, and more.

The Project Eagle group also started collecting winter hats and gloves on December 5 to be donated to Newtown Fund’s annual Holiday Basket Program. Donations for the effort will be collected in the school’s lobby through December 16.
