Joan M (Fisher) Kornhaas, 82, of Port St Lucie, Fla., and formerly of New Milford, died December 6 at Treasure Coast Hospice Stuart, with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Danbury, August 12, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Sadie (Colla) and Emerson Fisher.

Joan is also survived by her five children and their spouses, Matthew and Dawne Kornhaas of Newtown, Mark and Donna Kornhaas of Danbury, Peter and Jeanne Kornhaas of New Milford, and Marcia Caracciolo and Sharon Kornhaas, both of Hypoluxo, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Mark, Stephanie, and Britney of Danbury, Kristen and Brett of New Milford, and Matthew, Daniel, and Erin of Newtown; a great-granddaughter; and her brother Robert Fisher.

She grew up and raised her family in Danbury, graduating from St Vincent School of Nursing Bridgeport with an RN degree in 1952. Early in her career she worked maternity at Danbury Hospital, and spent her summers as camp nurse at Greenknoll Day Camp Brookfield. While she raised her family she worked part-time for several area doctors. Once her children were grown she went back to full-time nursing, as director of nurses at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center New Milford, from which she retired in 1995.

Mrs Kornhaas, with several of her fellow St Vincent alumna, helped establish the RN Nursing Scholarship League, which raised scholarship money to help nursing students obtain their degree.

She moved to Florida in 2004, where she enjoyed pursuing her many hobbies, including sewing, painting, and researching her ancestry. She loved golf and was an avid fan of the UConn Huskies Women’s Basketball team, but mostly she enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren, many cousins, and friends.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 24, at 10:30 am, at St Peter Church, 104 Main Street, Danbury. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart FL 34997 or at www.tchospice.org.
