On Sunday, December 28, Edmond Town Hall Theatre will host the final screenings of the films in 1939: The Greatest Year in Film — A 75th Anniversary Celebration Sunday Cinema Series.

At the Circus will be offered at 1 pm, featuring the willful mayhem of Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx; and at 4 and 7 pm, Babes in Arms, starring the beloved child stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, will be screened.

In At the Circus, the Marx Brothers attempt to help an owner of a small-time circus who has been double-crossed by his partner, who wants to take it over.  Someof the most memorable musical treats in this film include Groucho’s rendition of “Lydia the Tattooed Lady,” Chico’s “Beer Barrel Polka” on the piano, and Harpo’s “Blue Moon” on the harp.

“With quips, jabs, and jokes galore, this movie is sure to please,” says film series coordinator Jen Rogers.

A product of its time, Babes in Arms pairs Rooney and Garland as teenage children of vaudeville veterans. With the advent of “talkies,” vaudeville falls out of favor, which turns these once popular stars of the stage into “has-beens.”

Mickey Moran (Rooney) leads a group of talented kids from his community to put on a show of their own to make ends meet. The Oscar nominated musical score includes such hits as “Good Morning,” “You Are My Lucky Star,” “Where or When” and “I Cried for You.”  This film was both a commercial and critical hit, and earned Rooney an Oscar nomination.

Tickets for all shows are $2. All proceeds and donations will go to the continued improvements of Edmond Town Hall, at 45 Main Street.

The film series has been presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, who will be donating copies of all of the movies shown this year to C.H. Booth Library for the community to enjoy. Previous screenings have featured The Wizard of Oz and The Little Princess, which opened the series in May; Flying Deuces and Ninotchka in June, with moviegoers offered the choice of seeing those films on their own or as a double feature; Gunga Din in July; Goodbye, Mr Chips in August; Mr Smith Goes To Washington and Dark Victory in September; and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and another double-feature, The Return of Dr X and Son of Frankenstein in October.

Last month’s penultimate offering was a gala screening of Gone With The Wind. Guests were encouraged to dress as if they were attending the Hollywood premiere of the Academy Award-winning film, or as one of its characters, and many responded by doing so. It was, Ms Rogers said in a December 6 letter to The Newtown Bee, a dream realized for the Newtown native.
