  • Former Newtowner Heading Up California Wine Group

    Former Newtown resident and business owner Morgen McLaughlin was recently named new executive director of the Santa Barbara County (Calif.) Vintners’ Association (SBCVA).

    Ms McLaughlin previously served the Finger Lakes Wine Country Tourism Marketing Association in Corning, N.Y., where she served as the president and CEO since early 2007. From 1994 to 2006, Ms McLaughlin co-owned and managed McLaughlin Vineyard in Sandy Hook, overseeing all aspects of wine production, grape growing, and marketing.

    Guests will have an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting at an Alpha course to be held at The Iron Bridge Restaurant, 100 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook, on Tuesdays, beginning May 7, at 7 pm.

    During each session, people will enjoy food, laughter, and learning about the teachings of Jesus in an atmosphere where no question about life or God will be seen as too simple or too hostile.

  • Town Presses Owner On His Plans For Condemned House

    The town’s building official has sent the owner of a decaying Berkshire Road house a letter informing him that the vacant, rundown building has been condemned by the town due to its deterioration, and is asking him whether he intends to improve the structure to bring it up to habitable standards.

    Chief Building Official John Poeltl said April 29 that he has sent homeowner Santiago Britt a letter requesting an immediate response about his intentions regarding the house at 82 Berkshire Road (Route 34).

    Thursday, April 18: 11:02 am, motor vehicle accident, near 148 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook responded.

    Friday, April 19: 1:09 pm, investigation, near intersection of Platts Hill Road and Arlyn Ridge Road, Botsford responded.

    Slave Lake, Alberta, resident Mike Hughes felt moved to respond with action, even from 3,000 miles away, when he heard about 12/14. The photographer began offering copies of this photo for sale, and sent proceeds to New Hope Community Church of Newtown.

  • A Newtown Contingent Joins NYC’s St Patrick’s Day Parade

    A contingent from Newtown filled four charter buses and headed to New York City Saturday morning for the 252nd Annual St Patrick’s Day Parade. The Newtown High School Marching Band & Color Guard, along with members of Hawleyville and Sandy Hook Fire companies, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue, and a few teachers participated in the parade to represent.

    The group left from Newtown High School by 9:45 am, arriving in Manhattan shortly after 11.
