During a Sunday morning service that was filled with activity, this young parishioner at Newtown United Methodist Church seems to have found himself lifted in prayer. The 10 am worship service on April 28 included the welcoming of new members to the Sandy Hook church, the presentation of new devotionals for first responders, and — going on in the background — the blessing of NUMC church members who will be heading to Haiti this weekend.
Newtown’s five fire companies are coordinating efforts to present The Green Ribbon Ride, a motorcycle ride on Sunday, May 5, that will raise money for a number of local funds. The police-escorted ride, according to organizers, will be done “to remember and honor Newtown’s 26 angels.”
Sometimes a tree is more than just tree. The Sandy Hook Christmas Tree is a powerful symbol in our community. It has been a gathering place in times of joy and sadly in times of great sorrow. The Sandy Hook Christmas Tree stood with us and accepted the outpouring of grief from the community and from the world during our most difficult days. We owe that tree.

Former Newtown resident and business owner Morgen McLaughlin was recently named new executive director of the Santa Barbara County (Calif.) Vintners’ Association (SBCVA).
Ms McLaughlin previously served the Finger Lakes Wine Country Tourism Marketing Association in Corning, N.Y., where she served as the president and CEO since early 2007. From 1994 to 2006, Ms McLaughlin co-owned and managed McLaughlin Vineyard in Sandy Hook, overseeing all aspects of wine production, grape growing, and marketing.
The historic building above the Pootatuck River at 1 Glen Road in Sandy Hook center is being transformed into a warm and welcoming restaurant and tavern by experienced restaurateur Chris Bruno, formerly of Fiddler’s and Chris’ American Restaurant in Brookfield.
