Newquist Will Be Next Artist Featured

In Library Exhibition

Newtown artist Ruth Newquist is preparing a one-person art exhibit for the main floor of Cyrenius H. Booth Library. The show, “Cityscapes & Landscapes: Oils and Watercolors by Ruth Newquist,” will open Saturday, January 10, and remain on view until Sunday, February 29.

The public is invited to the artist’s opening reception on January 10 from 2 to 4 pm.

The exhibit of more than 30 works will feature New York SoHo street scenes in watercolor as well as New England landscapes, many of the local area.

The artist describes color as her focus.

“It creates the mood and each painting has its own mood,” says Mrs Newquist.

Many of her small oil paintings are painted en plein aire. These on location works, Mrs Newquist says, allow her to capture the real essence of the New England landscape. Even snow draws the artist outdoors to record the color and charm of the scene.

Ruth Newquist exhibits her paintings throughout New England and New York. She has won numerous awards from prestigious organizations including the Salmagundi Club, of which she is a member, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in NYC, North East Watercolor Society, and American Artist Professional League in NYC. She is also an artist member of the National Watercolor Society.

Inspired by a childhood love of art, Mrs Newquist attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, earning a BFA degree. She also attended Art Students League in NYC.

A professional highlight was when she was featured on the watercolor pages in the American Artist Magazine in June 1999 with a six-page layout depicting her vibrant SoHo series. She is also represented in Best of Watercolor III, a hardcover book published by Rockport Publishers.
