Painterly Landscape In Pastel Subject Of Next SCAN Program

Text Size

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Alain Picard painting a painterly landscape in pastel at its first meeting of the new year, scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, beginning at 7:30 pm.

The demonstration will take place in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). The public is invited, free of charge.

Mr Picard will demonstrate a painterly approach to the landscape using reference photographs, exploring the mystery of capturing light. In his demonstration, Mr Picard will cover how to create a thumbnail blueprint for a painting, use underpaintings for both speed and dynamism, and reveal how to mass in the big shapes of darks, middles, and lights to stay loose and fresh.

He also plans to teach how color communicates light and how to plan a color palette to capture the right mood and atmosphere in a landscape.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is always available by calling 203-426-6654 or visiting scanart.org.

“Verdant Pasture” is a 12-by-16-inch landscape by Alain Picard, who says he is awed by the beauty of God’s creation and tries to reflect that sense of wonder in his studies of landscapes. Mr Picard will lead a demonstration on creating painterly landscapes in a presentation hosted by The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown on January 9.
