MLK Celebration At The Gunnery

WASHINGTON GREEN — On Monday, January 16, at 7 pm, First Congregational Church Meeting House on the Green, The Gunnery will commemorate the life and legacy of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. The public is invited to join the celebration, free of charge.

Deborah Calhoun, a founder of the Sounds of Afrika Music and Dance Troupe of Waterbury, has teamed with fellow co-founders  Kojo Ben Reuben Bey and Abishai Ben Reuben Bey to produce a program centered on the stories of The Underground Railroad.

Gunnery students will read from school founder Frederick Gunn’s writing on slavery in the 1840s and 1850s and Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Deborah Calhoun organizes a tour of Underground Railroad sites in New Milford every year in September. The Sounds of Afrika was founded in 1995 to promote African and African-American culture to schools and communities while stressing unity and respect for all cultures. Troupe members have diverse backgrounds in the arts and have studied West African dance and drumming techniques extensively.
