Redgrave To Read ‘Torture Team’ At Long Wharf

NEW HAVEN – Did the United States government sanction torture in the wake of 9/11? Legendary actor and activist Vanessa Redgrave will join international lawyer and acclaimed author Philippe Sands to examine this question in a staged presentation of his book Torture Team. The one night only special event will take place on Sunday, January 16, on Long Wharf’s Stage II.

Curtain is 7 pm. Tickets are $75, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Center for Victims of Torture. Additional cast members and panelists will be announced at a later date.

Torture Team tells the story of Mr Sands’ investigation of Donald Rumsfeld’s 2002 memo authorizing the new interrogation techniques that led to torture at Guantanamo Bay and beyond.

Using Sands’ book as a basis, video clips from Judgment at Nuremberg, “24” and material from Murat Kurnaz’s Five Years of My Life: An Innocent Man in Guantanamo, a memoir chronicling his unjust imprisonment at the hands of US authorities, Mr Edelstein has put together a provocative evening of theatre. Two years of interviews and research resulted in the publication of Torture Team.
