SCAN Color In Winter 2024 Art Show & Sale To Open With Artist Demo, Reception
The Society of the Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) is presenting its annual Color in Winter show at Newtown Municipal Center for two months.
Presented in the center corridor of the municipal center at 3 Primrose Street, the show and sale opened Friday, January 5, and now continues weekdays until Thursday, February 29. Show hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am until 4:30 pm.
An opening reception is planned for Wednesday, January 10, from 3 to 5 pm. Snow date will be January 17.
Monhegan Island Landscape Demo
Prior to the opening reception on January 10, SCAN will host Rick Daskam painting a Monhegan Island landscape in oil. His presentation will begin at 1:30, also at the municipal center.
Daskam’s paintings have appeared in art galleries and juried exhibitions across Connecticut, New York, and Maine. Having studied art at Paier College of Art from 1978-1982, in 1998 he followed his passion of painting plein-air, and spent his time painting landscapes and farms in the local area surrounding his home.
Daskam visited Monhegan Island in Maine for the first time in 2002, and fell in love with its rugged beauty. Returning every year for a week of “sun up to sun down painting,” this highly accomplished artist has produced some of his most memorable works there.
In 2019 he was honored to be chosen as Artist of the Year with a solo show at the Island Inn.
In 2004 he began entering juried art exhibitions and museum shows. Preferring to express his passion in oil, Daskam has garnered numerous well-deserved awards from The Butler Museum of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio; Hudson Valley Art Association; The American Artists Professional League; Lyme Art Association and the Salmagundi Club in NYC.
In 2008 he began teaching classes in still life oil painting for SCAN and continued for several years. He has also taught for Ridgefield Guild of Artists and at Rowayton Art Center.
Currently he is co-president of Hudson Valley Art Association.

The demonstration and reception are both open to the public, free of charge.
