Families United in Newtown (FUN) a locally based nonprofit providing support and social/recreational activities for local families with special needs youths is inviting community members to “drive-by” and lend their horns and voices to help celebrate its members’ January birthdays.

Founder Linda Jones told The Newtown Bee this week that due to the virus situation, the group will not be holding a regular in-person January meeting. But that means the members and volunteers who have January birthdays will not have the normal celebratory cake and recognition.

“So we decided to invite all our FUN supporters and the entire community to participate in a brief car parade so our January birthday people won’t feel left out,” Jones said.

Due to an inclement weather forecast, the event previously set for Saturday, January 16 has been moved to the same time and location Sunday, January 17 at 2:15 pm, at the Newtown United Methodist Church in Sandy Hook Village center.

Participants will begin lining up at 2 pm, and at 2:15 the vehicles will circle the building, passing by the birthday group who will gather near the lower rear community room.

“We hope folks will blow their horns to help make our kids feel special, even though our activity is not happening like it normally would,” Jones said.

Participants will also be invited to sing “Happy Birthday” and to accept a piece of birthday cake as a small token of gratitude. The entire activity is expected to conclude by around 2:30 pm.

The church is located at 92 Church Hill Road. For more information about the group, visit familiesunitedinnewtown.org, or check the group’s Facebook page.
