WCSU Receives Diversity Award

DANBURY — A Western Connecticut State University adjunct professor was honored by the Black Student Alliance, a student organization, at the organization’s fourth annual People of Color Recognition Banquet held in December at the Westside campus.

The purpose of the event, which was attended by approximately 40 members of the university and local communities, is to recognize African Americans in the university who help to promote diversity and/or set a positive example on and off campus. This year, the student group honored six members of the university community.

Dr George Coleman has been teaching at WestConn for the past 18 years as an adjunct professor of history and education. When he is not teaching, he serves the Connecticut State Department of Education as associate commissioner of education. In addition to teaching at WestConn, Dr Coleman has also taught at Brooklyn College, Tufts University, and the University of New Haven. He received his academic degrees from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, the University of Michigan, and Columbia University. He has unselfishly given his time to many boards and commissions, including Danbury Hospital, United Way of Northern Fairfield County, the Association of Religious Communities, the NAACP, the Hord Foundation, and the Connecticut Commission on Children. Currently, he is chairman of the board of directors for the Connecticut United Way.
