Newtown High School Lists Available Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America Scholarship — The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America New England Chapter will award two $1,000 scholarships to two high school seniors who reside in New England who have asthma or significant allergies and plan to continue their education. Applicants should have attained a level of academic excellence and have strong extracurricular activities. The application includes an original essay. The winners will be featured in AAFA/NE press releases, publications and website, and appear at events and speak to the press if requested by AAFA/NE. Applications are available to download from www.asthmaandallergies.org. All applications are due by February 15.

Connecticut Association of Educational Office Professionals Scholarships (CAEOP) — The CAEOP scholarship encourages high school seniors to pursue careers in business education as educational secretaries or administrative assistants. Selection will be based on students’ intention to pursue a business or secretarial career, scholastic ability, extracurricular activity, leadership, civic involvement, and financial need. Applications available at the Career Center. The deadline is February 18.

Connecticut Nurserymen’s Foundation Scholarship — A $5,000 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Connecticut high school senior accepted into a two- or four-year course of study beneficial to the horticulture industry. This includes, but is not limited to, ornamental horticulture, landscaping, and nursery and greenhouse management. Although the scholarship is available to students attending programs in or out of Connecticut, students enrolled at the University of Connecticut will be offered an additional $2,000 per year by UConn’s College of Agriculture. Academic standing and financial standing will be an important of selection criteria. Applications are available in the Career Center and at www.flowersplantsinct.com. All applications must be received by March 17.

Howard Jennings Scholarship — One $500 nonrenewable scholarship will be awarded to a Connecticut high school student who has been accepted by the University of Connecticut, majoring in the field of horticulture in either the two- or four-year program. This award is funded by the Jennings family and friends in memory of Howard Jennings, former nursery manager at Summer Hill Nursery and member of the Connecticut Nursery and Landscape Association. The student is to complete the same application as the Connecticut Nurserymen’s Foundation Scholarship. All applications must be received by March 17.

KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program — The Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel’s Scholars Program is looking for graduating high school seniors with entrepreneurial drive, strong perseverance, and demonstrated financial need attending college in September 2008 at a public college or university in their state of residence. Applicants must also have a GPA minimum of 2.75 and be US citizens or permanent residents. Students may apply online at www.kfcscholars.org. The deadline is February 15.

Latino Scholarship Fund — Scholarships provided by the Latino Scholarship Fund are available to college-bound Latino high school seniors from eight towns in the greater Danbury area. Applicants must be of Latino heritage and US citizens. A “Latino” is defined as any person descended from at least one parent or grandparent born in any recognized Spanish-speaking countries or US territories, and who identify with what is commonly accepted as “Latino culture.” To qualify students must demonstrate character, integrity, academic standing and/or potential, involvement in and commitment to their communities, and financial need. The amount of awards to be determined by relative financial need and the availability of funds. In 2007, 23 local students were awarded a total of $55,000. Applications are available at www.danburylatinofund.com, and at the NHS Career Center. The deadline is March 15.

Meserve Memorial Fund Scholarships — High school seniors and graduates in Bethel, Brookfield, Bridgewater, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, and Sherman are eligible to this $2,500 scholarship for studying environmental sciences and medically related fields. A course of environmental studies includes, but is not limited to, agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological studies, forestry and marine studies. Medically related programs include, but are limited to, premedicine programs, nursing, and medical research. Applications are available at www.fccfoundation.org/page32824.cfm. The application is due on March 1.

Monsanto Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program — Monsanto will award 100 scholarships for $1,500 to high school seniors from farming families who wish to pursue on career in agriculture. Applicants for this national scholarship program should have an above-average academic record and plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school to study any agriculture-related subject. Applications are available at www.monsanto.com and must be submitted online by February 15.

Nelnet $1 Million Scholarship Giveaway — Nelnet will award $1 million in scholarships to graduating high school seniors though a website contest. There is no essay requirement, and all winners are selected at random. Ten grand prizes of up to $25,000 will be selected monthly. There are also 750 $1,000 scholarships. Scholarship recipients are selected monthly until August 2008. Enter at www.nelnet.com/win.
