Anne Smith Nanavaty

Anne Smith Nanavaty, 90, of Southbury, and formerly of Newtown, died January 7 at Danbury Hospital. Born August 25, 1924, in Port Chester, N.Y., she is now reunited with her parents Martha and Charles Smith, and good friends Ethel Samson and Alma Braitling.

By her side each day of their marriage was her loving husband Krishnalal (Kris) Nanavaty.

Mrs Nanavaty was graduated from Bates College in 1946. After graduation she worked for the YWCA in Troy, N.Y. It was there she met Kris while he was attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They married on May 18, 1951, at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Bridgeport, and shared 64 years of love and happiness. They raised six children and enjoyed special times with their ten grandchildren. During their marriage, the Nanavatys lived in Troy, Philadelphia, Levittown, Penn., Cinnaminson, N.J., and Rochester, N.Y., before settling in Newtown for 25 years, and ultimately Southbury, for the last 20 years.

Mrs Nanavaty devoted her life to helping others working as a social worker in Troy and Germantown, Penn. She was a preschool teacher at the Children’s Adventure Center in Sandy Hook, and after receiving her master of education degree from Bridgeport University at age 53, she became the director of Children and Youth Services in Danbury, where she created and implemented programs for at-risk youth.

She was an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Book and Author program. Her volunteer activities included the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Sunday school teacher at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, where she was also a member of the choir, Newtown Youth Services, FISH, and Meals on Wheels. Anne loved life, her family, travel, and meeting new people.

Mrs Nanavaty will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and friend. In addition to her husband, her children and spouses David and Lorraine Nanavaty, Charles and Joanne Nanavaty, Brian and Cindy Nanavaty, Alan and Nancy Nanavaty, Glenn Nanavaty and his fiancée Mary Williams, and Jayne Dahl; and her grandchildren Kyrie Dahl, Matt Williams, Adam, Colin, Sasha, Alexis, Aaron, Hannah, Kali, and Connor Nanavaty survive Mrs Nanavaty.

A Celebration of Life service will take place Saturday, January 17, at 11 am, at the Church of Epiphany, 262 Main Street North, in Southbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heritage Village Ambulance Association, PO Box 2045,Southbury CT 06488 or a charity of choice.
