Local residents have two opportunities on Friday to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. There is no charge at either location to receive the vaccine.

Newtown Health District is planning a Moderna clinic from 10 am until 2 pm January 14. This clinic is by appointment only, for those age 18 and over; registration must be done through the Town of Newtown website.

The clinic will be at Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street. Those attending the clinic should use the building’s main entrance, not the senior center entrance on the western side of the building.

Those with appointments will have the option of receiving a first dose, second dose, or booster shot. Those receiving the second dose and booster shots must have their vaccination card with them, for proof of previous dose as well as to have the card updated.

Those planning to receive the vaccine should note that they will need to wait at least 15 minutes (up to 30, depending on health history) for observation after receiving the dose.

Contact Newtown Health Department, 203-270-4291, for additional information.

CT DPH-Griffin Health Clinics

The second clinic planned on Friday is the next in an ongoing series under the CT Department of Public Health-Griffin Health coordinated by St Rose of Lima Parish Nurse Nancy Rhodes. These are walk-in clinics. No appointments are available.

These clinics are being conducted at NYA Sports & Fitness Center, 4 Primrose Street. This week’s clinic is scheduled for 11 am to 4 pm. It will offer Pfizer first and second doses for ages 12 and up, and boosters for ages 12 and up. Anyone age 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent/adult guardian.

Attendees should have their vaccine card available for updating.

Another adult/age 12 and up walk-in clinic at NYA is planned for Friday, January 28. That clinic will begin at 10:30 am. Anyone seeking a vaccine that day must be in the building by 3:30, according to Rhodes.

A pediatric clinic — for children ages 5-11 — is planned for Friday, January 21, beginning at 3 pm. Doors for that clinic will close at 7.

This clinic will offer first or second doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Children must be accompanied, and vaccine cards should be presented for updating.

Additional information for the clinics at NYA can be obtained by contacting Rhodes at 845-641-7277.
