Lions Welcome New Members

At a recent meeting of the Newtown Lions Club at the Inn in Newtown, four new members were welcomed into the club: Jeff Nickse, Earl Sims, Dr Joseph Young, and Jon Christensen. Ken Hostetler also is a new member. Membership growth has been strong the last three years. In each of these years there has been a net growth of at least five members.

The Newtown Lions Club’s motto is “We Serve.” In addition to the many checks they give to various Newtown organizations they have a number of their own projects. A January Blood Drive was the most recent project. They also ran a sight booth at the Newtown Health Fair. Dr Moore gave free eye examinations.

Among the other projects the Lions are involved in are Lose the Litter Day, Americares Day, and bringing the US Air Force Band to Newtown for a free concert in May.

The most concerted effort of the Lions year 2000-2001 has been to plan and raise money for the Treadwell Park Playgrounds. On November 11, the club sponsored a Casino Night for the Treadwell Park, which netted over $4,500.

Two other fundraisers for Treadwell Park are being planned for this year: a duck race in May or June and a pancake breakfast at the Methodist Church on March 10.

Anyone desiring more information on the building or financing of Treadwell Park or on the Newtown Lions Club should call Ed Miklaszewski at 426-2759 or Gordon Williams at 426-6443.
