Robert DiSibio, a 2019 Newtown High School graduate, is having quite a basketball season for Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

DiSibio ranks No. 1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in points per game with 21.3 through the first 15 contests and leads the conference in several categories. He was named to Washington and Lee’s Holiday All-Tournament Team and was recognized as the ODAC Player of the Week on January 2.

The junior from Sandy Hook averaged 28 points and 6.5 rebounds and went 31-of-34 from the foul line (91.2 percent) in helping Washington and Lee to a 3-1 record over two tournaments during the holiday season.

DiSibio registered 34 points to go with three rebounds in an 89-85 overtime victory over Susquehanna University to kick off the Puerto Rico Clasico. He was 11-of-18 from the field including 3-of-6 from 3-point range as well as 9-of-10 from the stripe. He made two free throws to force overtime and then scored eight of the Generals’ 12 points in the extra frame. He added one assist in his 27-minute shift. In game two of the tournament, DiSibio went for 23 points and five boards in an 86-72 win over the University of Scranton. He canned four 3-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the foul line while adding two steals to his stat sheet.

In the Washington and Lee Holiday Tournament, DiSibio helped the Generals to a 1-1 showing. He started with 29 points and eight boards with two steals and an assist in an 83-70 win over Vassar College. He was 9-of-18 from the field including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc with an 8-of-9 showing from the line. In the championship game, DiSibio logged 46 minutes on the floor in a 103-95 double-overtime loss to nationally 20th-ranked University of Mary Washington. He posted 26 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He buried five three-pointers and was 7-for-7 on free throw attempts. He added four assists and a steal to his game output.

Heading into this week, DiSibio leads the ODAC in points (289), scoring (22.2), field goals made (90-of-189), 3-pointers made (32-of-83), free throws made (77-of-92), and minutes played (433). He is fourth in free throw shooting (83.7 percent), fifth in defensive rebounds (65), sixth in total boards (87), and tenth in rebounding average (6.7).

“Playing basketball at the college level is an incredible amount of fun. The season is much longer and more intense than it was in high school, but I wouldn’t say it’s more work because there is nothing else I would rather be doing,” DiSibio said. “The thing I enjoy most about playing is the challenge. Basketball presents lots of obstacles — both physical, and mental. It’s exciting to constantly be learning and growing from every possible experience, both on and off the court.”

DiSibio, before turning his attention to basketball, grew up playing a variety of sports, including soccer and baseball, in addition to basketball. “I played Volleyball during my senior year of high school and loved it,” he added.

DiSibio hopes to play basketball overseas in the EuroLeague after college.

“I am also interested in pursuing a career working for the NBA or a professional team, which I got a taste of last summer when I interned with the Milwaukee Bucks. I believe my major in cognitive and behavioral sciences will support me no matter what career path I take,” DiSibio said.

Last summer he worked as a business operations intern with the Bucks, and this summer will be back with the Bucks as a player development and video coordinator intern, he said.
