NMS Students Raise Money For Caroline’s Fund

By Tanjua Damon

Sixth Grade Cluster C students dug deep into their pockets, pulling out spare change to help collect money for Caroline’s Fund.

Cluster C is located in The Dungeon at Newtown Middle School, but there was no keeping these sixth graders down after they collected $131 for the fund that helps assist families of ill or disabled children in Newtown.

One of the students who organized the fundraiser was Nathaniel Basch-Gould. He is the brother of Caroline, who was born stillborn. The fund was established in her memory in 1996. She was the daughter of Rachel Basch and David Gould.

“It’s a charity that has been started by my aunt in the name of my sister who was born stillborn,” Nathaniel explained.

Several students helped Nathaniel do the collecting before school, during homeroom, and after lunch.

“I think it was for a good cause,” George Martens said.

Chris Tomascak agreed that the idea was for a good cause and helping people is something he likes to do.

“I like helping people,” he said. “I think it’s good to raise money for all people who are less fortunate.”

Middle school teacher Sheila Kolesar said the students were looking for a good project to do around the holiday season. She had read about another student who had donated money to Caroline’s Fund as part of her birthday party and thought the sixth graders would like to do the same kind of thing.

“Nathaniel explained the idea to all the classes. They collected before school and after lunch,” Ms Kolesar said.

The students in Cluster C attend Ms Kolesar’s class along with students from the classes of Mr Larson, Ms Oliver, and Ms Sasso.

Newtown Youth Services accepts donations for Caroline’s Fund. Anyone interesting in donating can send donations to Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street, Newtown, CT 06470. Please put Caroline’s Fund in the memo, or please call 270-4335.
