Apartments Would Be Unappealing, Out Of Character

To the Editor:

In reference to the letter from Kathryn Blanco, I’d like to point out that in her own words, people love the small town quality of Newtown but it is unfortunately being chipped away by developers.

The townhouses that were squeezed into Sandy Hook were not exactly worthy of the vibe of antique homes and charm of that area in town. The rental apartments now on Washington Avenue are at least hidden in a small way from the prominent thoroughfare.

But having a new jammed-in cluster of apartments and parking area right there on South Main Street is just not in keeping with the small town feel and open space. The new businesses down the road don’t match that ideal either but that’s “progress” I’ve been told.

Twenty-seven families where only one home and a barn used to be!

How can that not look crowded and out of character? That sounds overly ambitious by any standard. This is not a city. Indeed, this development can’t help but impact that section of town in an unappealing manner.
