Occupation: I’ve spent the last three years earning my master’s in social work from the University of Connecticut, and am beginning a geriatric care management practice. I will offer services aimed at assisting older individuals and their families to make the best possible adjustments when faced with complications of aging. I am also a mother. I received my bachelor’s degree in the dual majors of psychology and sociology at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

How Long in Newtown: We have lived here for almost 16 years. I am originally from Pinehurst, N.C. and have lots of family in North Carolina, but I have lived in Connecticut most of my life.

Biggest Change Seen in Town: Despite the increase in traffic and neighborhoods, so far Newtown still seems like a lovely, small, New England town. It still has that small town feel. Much of that has to do with the level of caring and spirit of volunteerism found in so many residents.

Family: My husband, Steve, and I have been married for 23 years. We have three children: Maggie, in her first year at New York University; Steve, a junior at Newtown High; and Emily, in seventh grade, at Newtown Middle School.

Pets: We have a bunny named Cottontail; two cats, Tigger and Tinkerbell; and some fish.

Hobbies: I find yard work very therapeutic. The very best day would be spent with a great book under an umbrella at the beach.

Favorite Books and Authors: Sometimes my favorite book is the one I have just finished, but two longtime favorites stand out, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton.

Favorite TV Show: X-Files and the Weather Channel. I like to know what’s happening with the weather.

Organizations: I am a member of the board of directors of the Family Counseling Center and a co-chair for the 2000 Holiday Festival. Is anyone interested in helping? I also sit on the board of the non-profit Ballet Miniature, Inc where we are working hard to raise funds for the full-length ballet, La Fille Mal Gardee planned for late fall. Letters are currently going out to businesses for donations. I am a member of the Newtown Commission on Aging, Trinity Church, and several professional organizations.

Most Vivid Memory of Newtown: I think I have to say I will always remember the seasonal changes in Newtown. It really is a beautiful town. There is not a momth that goes by that there isn’t glory here. June is an exquisite month in Newtown.

Favorite Vacation Spot: Bald Head Island, N.C. is a charming and inexpensive (my Dad has a house there) getaway for our family. I can really relax there. There are no cars. We get around on bikes or golf carts. We go to the beach on the east side of the island and ride the waves.

Personal Philosophy: I try to stay optimistic and persistent with my goals. When the inevitable bumps and bruises of life happen, I am inspired by those who pick up their chins and move ahead, but we have to remember – that isn’t easy for many people. As individuals and a society, we need to be more responsive to those who need our help.
