Nighthawk Grapplers Win Weight Class Brackets As Team Places Third In Tourney

Newtown High School's wrestling team had a third-place finish in the Ridgefield Challenge on January 30. The Nighthawks had four weight class championships, a runner-up result, and a fourth-place finish as they scored 134.5 points to edge fourth-place Daniel Hand of Madison (127 points) for third. Monroe-Woodbury won the 17-team event with 202 points and St Anthony's scored 155 to place second.

Alex Stavola won the 152-pound weight class title. Stavola, after receiving a bye in the first round of the championships, won an 8-2 decision over Ridgefield's Dylan Chelednik in the quarterfinals, defeated Daniel Hand's Zak Santoemma 6-4 in a sudden victory (first overtime) in the semifinals, then defeated St Anthony's Dutch Schultz via pin fall in a time of 4:52 to claim the title, scoring 22 team points.

Joe Accousti won at 170 pounds. Accousti defeated St Anthony's Ryan Vahey by pin fall in 3:49, beat Fitch's David Magowan by pin fall in 0:15 of the quarterfinals, earned a 29-2 major decision over Stamford's Kevin Thomas in the semifinals, and claimed the championship by defeating Daniel Hand's Luke Bernardo by pin fall in 2:37, scoring 27 team points.

Anthony Falbo claimed the 182 division title. Falbo defeated St Anthony's Kevin Buser via pin fall in 1:05 of the quarterfinals, topped Westhill's Davonte Jeffers in the semifinals via pin fall in a time of 0:49, and won a 10-6 decision over Monroe-Woodbury's Kendall Elfstrum in the finals for 22 points.

Andy Hubina captured the 195 championship. Hubina defeated Ridgefield's Chris D'entrone via pin fall in 1:04 of the quarterfinals, scored a 5-4 decision over St Anthony's Russell Kohler in the semis, and defeated Greenwich's Erik Menchaca via pin fall in 3:32 of the finals, scoring 24 points.

Ed Lovely reached the championship round of the 145-pound weight class and earned second place. In the first round, Lovely pinned Amity's Nathan Morrissey in 1:52. He defeated Westhill's Jessy Pedraza via pin fall in 0:18 of the quarters, and topped Bristol Central's Shane Oxton via technical fall (20-4 at 5:15) in the semifinals. Lovely lost a 3-0 decision to Monroe-Woodbury's Evan Barczak in the finals, and scored 21.50 team points.

Tom Long placed fourth at 220. Long, after receiving a first-round bye, beat Greenwich's Peyton Larkin via pin fall in 1:20 of the quarterfinals. Long lost a 9-4 decision to Bristol Central's Noah Cruz in the semifinals, but bounced back with a 12-4 major decision win over Bethel's Nick Cote in the consolation semis, then fell in a 9-4 decision to JJ East Fishkill's Andrew Anthony in the third-place match. Long scored 12 team points.

Newtown's other results are as follows: 106: Nikolas Accousti (2-2). 113: Justin Bogdanoff (0-2). 120: Jack Wellman (1-2). 126: Aaron Occhipinti (out due to illness). 132: Owen Walsh (1-2). 138: Jack Durate (0-2). 160: Peter Mihok (0-2).
