Census Offers Local Jobs

Testing and application sessions for people who are interested in working on the Year 2000 Census will be held at the Cyrenius H. Booth Library and Edmond Town Hall this month.

The area census office wants to hire 1,000 to 2,000 census takers to work in 27 towns and cities in northern Fairfield and New Haven counties. Jobs are temporary, part-time positions lasting six to eight weeks. Job applicants must be aged 18 or older.

The jobs pay $10.75 to $15.75 per hour. Most positions will start in March.

Testing and application sessions take approximately 90 minutes. Each applicant must complete an application, a background questionnaire, an I-9 form and take a 30-minute written test. Veterans can obtain a five-point preference by bringing a copy of their DD214 to the test session.

February sessions will be held in Newtown, Bethel, Brookfield, Monroe, Shelton, Oxford, and Redding. In Newtown, the sessions will be held at the library at 1 pm on February 7, 14, and 28, and at the town hall at 1 pm on February 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, and 29.

To obtain more information or to register for a testing session, call the Waterbury Local Census Office at 203/596-4315 or toll-free at 800/325-7733.
