Newtown Summer Schools Will Offer Musical Theater Workshop

Newtown Continuing Education will offer something new in its Newtown Summer Schools program this summer — a musical theater workshop.

The program will run for six weeks from June 26 through August 4, at Newtown High School, and is open to all students currently in grades 6 through 11.

Students will complete workshops in all aspects of musical theater including singing, acting, dancing, lighting, sound, set construction, makeup, costumes, advertising, and team building. Their efforts will be highlighted in two cabaret-style performances that will be held at the end of the third and sixth weeks.

John Harned, the director of choral studies at Newtown High School, will serve as the camp administrator. He graduated cum laude from Central Connecticut State University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in music education.

Mr Harned has a wealth of performance experience from regional theater, and has performed the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. He will draw on his theater and education background to give the students a fulfilling, educational, and memorable summer camp experience.

Information regarding registration and fees will be coming soon.
