Newtown Winter Guard Extravaganza Draws Big Crowd

The Newtown Winter Guard Extravaganza was held on the night of Saturday, January 28, at the Newtown High School gymnasium on Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook.

Besides Newtown, the competition attracted participants from schools including Beecher, Bethel, Brookfield, Masuk, Montville, Tolland, New Milford, Westhill, Port Chester, Norwalk, Jonathan Law, Ramsey, Danbury, Trumbull, and Cheshire. Twenty-four guard teams performed in five classes.

Newtown’s Varsity Winter Guard competed in the Scholastic A class and finished in first place in that class with a score of 67.80. The group performed to recorded music from the movie Stealth.

The varsity group has won several championships. That unit will be competing in the 2006 Winter Guard International Championships to be held in April in Dayton, Ohio.

The town’s three other Winter Guard units also participated in the January 28 event.

The Junior Varsity Winter Guard performed to music from the movie, The Fifth Element.

The Newtown Middle School Winter Guard performed to the music from Escape From The Zoo, from the movie Madagascar.

The Junior Winter Guard performed “Grim Grinning Ghosts” from the movie The Haunted Mansion. The junior winter guard members attend the town’s elementary schools and Reed Intermediate School.
