Parent Connection Lecture

In response to the 2005 Governor’s Survey of Newtown youth, which outlines a poll taken of Newtown high school and middle school students about drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, the Newtown Parent Connection has been asked to collaborate with the Newtown Public Schools and Prevention Council in presenting a program by Isabel Burk, a certified health education specialist.

Ms Burk, director of The Health Network, is a nationally known, award-winning expert on health, prevention, and educational issues. She is the author of two books and numerous articles relating to substance abuse. Her latest article “Inhalants — The Invisible Threat” was published in the 2005 Student Assistance Journal this summer.

Her professional achievements have been honored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Northeast Center for Safe and Drug-Free Schools, and the New York State Department of Health. She has been an instructor for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and has served as a national reviewer for the fifth grade DARE curriculum.

The forum will be held on Wednesday, February 8, from 7 to 9 pm, in the Reed Intermediate School cafetorium. The snow date for this event is Thursday, February 9. This program is specifically offered for adults only and is not appropriate for young people. Parents, guardians, and care-givers are invited to attend to learn positive parenting tips to protect children from the threat of inhalants and other gateway substances.
